Experiential Video in Victoria
11.08.11

I've been selected to create a new animation that will become an interactive installation and solo exhibition at G++ Gallery in summer 2012. The work will be part of Limbic Media's Interactive Film and Video series launching Thursday, November 10th 2011 at 1119 Fort Street, Victoria BC. If you're in town, come see an installation by Doug Jarvis as well as previous works by myself and the other 3 artists in the series.

Update from the West Coast
08.19.11

Vancouver

This summer, I packed up my studio, jumped on a plane and headed for the beaches and the forests of the West Coast to explore 3D video installation.

After an incredible year filled with shows and heavy production in Montreal, I'll be pursuing a Masters in media arts this fall at Vancouver's Emily Carr University of Art & Design to continue to push my work further. Stay tuned for clips!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, Leaving Ground is being exhibited in Australia for a new media arts exhibition at eMerge Media Space. The trailer will be posted shortly.

Plants + Basel + Beijing
07.07.11

A Plant Wedding continues to tour the world! It's been selected by ArtPort Projects for the third edition of Cool Stories for a Hot Planet - a compilation of 19 short videos and animations on climate change by artists from around the globe. The collection was premiered during this year's Art Basel at the Switzerland Architecture Museum.

This video is also finishing up its 2-year tour of China with Art Contraste's exhibition Canadian Cameras at Work. I've received gracious support from Les Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec to attend the final vernissage in Beijing this September. I'm currently finalizing financing but hope I'll get to go - it would be my first journey to that side of the world... More info soon!

Quelques commentaires sur l'expo 'the space in between'...

– Jocelyne Lepage, La Presse

Annie Briard’s video installation The Space in Between is a lovely and lovingly hand-crafted animated film whose central character, a lonely woman in a simply-adorned room, captures her tears in a big red bowl and uses them to create a magical world full of mythical creatures. In a way, Briard’s work takes me back to Boyle’s, for here, what resonates most is the hand, present […] present in the small movements and gestures that tell the character’s story.
– Stacey DeWolfe, Akimblog

– Éloi Desjardins, Un Show d’Motarts

New Website
05.05.10

Welcome to my new website! It's still under construction (videos don't play yet, etc), and I'm still in the process of transfering some of the data from the old one. I really loved the old site, but I think this version is easier to use and with springtime here I figure I can use a break from the dark and creepy. Well, for today anyway. What do you think about it? The site was programmed and designed with the help of the awesome Julian Gollner.

Check in soon as I’ll be updating this place often with new works for you to see. If you’d like to join my mailing list, let me know.

Le français s'en vient sous peu!

My work in Beijing, China

My time in Nova Scotia has sadly come to an end. There was something amazing about camping in the forest, bathing in a pond, eating from the gardens and orchards, hiking on the sea floor at low tide and spending every night by the fire staring up at the stars, especially for city girl me. It was incredible to have my own personal forest studio and work without boundaries, foregoing my video camera and computer for natural materials.

What emerged was Fallings, an installation commemorating the birds that have been falling from the sky in recent years because of pesticides and pollution. I made bird effigies out of typical nesting materials and hung them in a small hidden clearing in the woods formed with transplanted moss and branch-woven archways. On White Rabbit Festival night, the birds had 'fallen' and I lead an interactive performance - a torch-lit audience-wide procession through the woods - resulting in the bird-sculptures being ceremoniously burnt in an enormous bonfire.

Images below hint at the work, more will be available in this site's portfolio section soon. In the meantime, to learn more about the experience, check out my article in Indyish and another White Rabbit artist, Rachel Ni Chuinn's blog here...

Down the rabbit hole in NS
08.04.09

I'm really excited! I've been invited to participate in Nova Scotia's White Rabbit Arts festival and residency this August, to experience nature in all its glory on the 70-acre organic farm Red Clay on the Bay of Fundy. I'll be camping with 13 other artists for 5 days and nights, where we'll be exploring the site's forest, ponds and gardens while skillsharing and creating multimedia environmental artworks. The site will open its doors on August 15th for a 24-hour experiential festival of performance, sculpture, video and sound art. Do visit me again soon to learn about the unfoldings of my exploratory installation and performance Fallings. In the meantime, you can check out the festival's website.

Fall brings new reds...
10.01.08

Much has happened since the Arborescence RED show this past spring. "A Plant Wedding" won the AAVA award for technical brilliance and was later screened in Toronto's NFB mediatheque for the 2008TAIS showcase. Arborescence RED works were also exhibited for Studio XX's Matricules archive launch party.

I'm currently revisiting my red palette and bringing new textiles to the mix, which will then be animated into a video as performance thanks to a grant from Oboro.

Check back very soon for new paintings - and all my videos will finally be viewable here as of next week!
---

Check out Lise Treutler's awesome Indyish article on the Arborescence RED show:

"But what is “the environment?” Who — and how — are we to talk about it? Visual artist Annie Briard wants to encourage this more focused discussion and has set about doing so through works displayed in her current exhibit, Arborescence RED."
